This evocative print depicts Jean-Paul Rabaut de Saint-Etienne (1743-1793), a prominent French churchman and statesman who dedicated his life to seeking a moderating influence in the tumultuous political landscape of revolutionary France. Born in the southern region of Languedoc, Rabaut de Saint-Etienne rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church, becoming a respected figure in both religious and secular circles. As the French Revolution gained momentum, Rabaut de Saint-Etienne advocated for a peaceful transition to a constitutional monarchy, hoping to preserve the monarchy while protecting the rights of the people. However, his moderate stance put him at odds with both the radical elements of the Revolution and the monarchy itself. Despite his best efforts, Rabaut de Saint-Etienne was ultimately arrested and brought to trial before the Revolutionary Tribunal in Paris. On March 25, 1793, he was sentenced to death by guillotine for his alleged counter-revolutionary activities.
