This stunning sculpture depicts Ramses III, the last great Pharaoh of the New Kingdom in Egypt, who ruled from 1180 BC to 1155 BC. The sculpture, carved from granite, was discovered at Mit-Rahineh, a site located on the west bank of the Nile River near Cairo. The vertical, upright design and the use of vibrant colors add to the lifelike and imposing nature of the portrait. Ramses III is shown wearing the traditional nemes headdress and a false beard, symbols of his divine authority as a Pharaoh.
