EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a significant historical document from the Visigothic period in Spain: the Visigothic Code, also known as the Forum Iudicum, Liber Iudiciorum, or Lex Visigothorum. The code is a set of laws promulgated by Visigoth King Recceswinth (ca. 654-672), who ruled over Hispania during this time. The manuscript, written in lower case Visigoth letters around 1058, is currently housed in the National Library of Madrid. The Visigothic Code is notable for its preservation by the Moors, who allowed Christians to use their own laws. When Ferdinand III of Castile took the city of Córdoba in 1236, he ordered the code to be adopted and translated into Castilian, giving rise to the Fuero Juzgo. The manuscript depicted here is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Mozarabic art in Spain. It was created by the amanuensis Froila for Presbyter Munnio. The miniature painting, which can be seen on Folio 10r of the manuscript, is a valuable representation of the artistic and historical significance of this important legal text.
