Aquitaine Bark Bucket Forest Landes Leaning Maritime Pine Region Resin Tapping Taps Trunk Gascony

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the 1910s, a resinier, or resin collector, is seen carefully tapping the bark of a leaning pine tree in the heart of the Landes Forest in southwestern France. The forest, now part of the historic Gascony region and known as Aquitaine, is Europe's largest maritime pine forest, stretching over 100,000 hectares. The resinier, dressed in a simple tunic and wearing a broad-brimmed hat to shield himself from the sun, uses a small hammer to tap the tree's bark, releasing the precious resin that oozes out and collects in a bucket. The pine tree, with its long, twisted trunk and gnarled branches, leans precariously, its roots exposed and reaching out for stability in the sandy soil. The Landes Forest, located in the Landais area of the Landes region, has a rich history and is renowned for its unique ecosystem. The maritime pine trees, which thrive in the sandy soil and salty air, provide a habitat for a diverse range of wildlife, including the endangered European rolling beetle and the sand lizard. The forest is also home to numerous species of birds, including the black woodpecker, the little owl, and the red-backed shrike. The resin collected from the pine trees has been used for centuries for various purposes, including medicinal, industrial, and culinary applications. In the past, it was used to waterproof ships, as a component in varnishes and turpentine, and as a source of tar for roofing and road surfacing. Today, the resin is primarily used in the production of rosin, a substance used in the manufacture of sizing for paper, as well as in the production of turpentine and other chemicals. This photograph captures a moment in time, a glimpse into the past, and offers a reminder of the rich natural heritage of the Landes Forest and the important role it plays in the history and culture of France.
