This engraving depicts Matteo Ricci (1552-1610), an Italian Jesuit priest who is considered one of the founding figures of the Jesuit China Mission. Ricci's missionary work in China marked a significant turning point in the relationship between the East and the West. Born in Macerata, Italy, Ricci joined the Society of Jesus in 1571. After studying mathematics, geography, and astronomy, he was sent to Goa, India, in 1577 to continue his education. In 1583, he was sent to Macau, China, where he spent the rest of his life. Ricci's approach to evangelization was unique. Instead of focusing on religious conversion, he focused on building bridges between Chinese culture and Christianity. He learned the Chinese language, studied Chinese history and philosophy, and even adopted Chinese dress and customs. Ricci's efforts paid off. He was able to gain the trust of Chinese scholars and officials, and he was eventually invited to live in the Forbidden City in Beijing. There, he established a Jesuit mission and began to translate Western scientific and mathematical texts into Chinese. This engraving captures the image of a man who was not only a priest but also a scholar, a diplomat, and a bridge-builder. Ricci's work paved the way for further cultural exchanges between China and the West, and his legacy continues to inspire intercultural dialogue to this day.
