Roberts, born on January 30, 1832, rose to prominence in the British Army with his strategic victories in India, earning him the nickname "The Great Marquess of the Sudan." Roberts' military career began in 1853 when he joined the 24th Regiment of Foot. He quickly distinguished himself in the Crimean War, and in 1857, he was appointed as the military secretary to Lord Canning, the Governor-General of India. Roberts' greatest accomplishments came during the Mahdist War in the Sudan, where he led the British forces to a series of decisive victories, culminating in the capture of Khartoum in 1898.
