EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, C.W.A. Scott's second wife, Greta, warmly welcomes her husband and flying partner, Giles Guthrie, as they disembark from their victorious aircraft at Croydon Airport in October 1936. The image captures the excitement and elation of their successful completion of the Schlesinger Portsmouth to Johannesburg air race. The Schlesinger Portsmouth to Johannesburg race was a long-distance aviation competition that took place between Portsmouth, England, and Johannesburg, South Africa. C.W.A. Scott and Giles Guthrie, both accomplished pilots, flew a Percival Gull Wing monoplane named "The Lady Rhondda" in the race. Their determination and skill paid off as they crossed the finish line first, covering the 6,100 miles (9,817 kilometers) in just over 45 hours. Greta's radiant smile and enthusiastic embrace convey the pride and joy she felt for her husband and flying partner's remarkable achievement. The photograph also highlights the significant role that women played in the early days of aviation, with Greta acting as a vital support system for her husband's aviation endeavors. The aircraft, with its sleek design and the distinctive "The Lady Rhondda" insignia, stands proudly in the background, a testament to the technological advancements of the era and the pioneering spirit of the aviators who dared to push the boundaries of flight. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the history of aviation and the personal stories of the remarkable individuals who shaped it.
