EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS Furious (47) c.1918: A Pioneering Carrier of Air Power This evocative photograph captures the majesty and innovation of HMS Furious (47) in the late stages of the First World War. Commissioned in 1914 as a battlecruiser, HMS Furious underwent a significant transformation in 1917, when it was converted into the Royal Navy's first dedicated aircraft carrier. The image shows HMS Furious with a complement of Sopwith Camel biplanes, which were launched from the deck using a system of ropes and pulleys. The aircraft were then flown off, often to attack enemy targets or provide reconnaissance. This revolutionary method of deploying aircraft from a ship at sea gave the British a significant advantage in the final years of the war. The photograph also underscores the importance of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) in the naval war effort. The RNAS was formed in 1914 and played a crucial role in the maritime battles of the First World War. By the end of the war, the RNAS had over 30,000 personnel and operated over 3,000 aircraft. The conversion of HMS Furious into an aircraft carrier marked the beginning of a new era in naval warfare. The carrier's successor, HMS Argus, was even larger and more advanced, and went on to serve in the Second World War. Today, the legacy of HMS Furious lives on in the form of the modern aircraft carriers that continue to serve in the Royal Navy and other navies around the world.
