EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Air Commodore Edward Maitland Maitland (1880-1921) in front of a biplane, marking the end of his illustrious career in the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force. Born in 1880, Maitland joined the Army Service Corps in 1898 and later transferred to the Royal Engineers in 1900. He was an early aviation pioneer, learning to fly in France in 1910 and becoming an instructor at the Military Aviation School at Upavon in 1912. During World War I, Maitland served with distinction, rising to the rank of Air Commodore and being awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and the Air Force Cross (AFC). He also received the CMG (Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George) for his services to military aviation. In this photograph, taken in 1921, Maitland is seen in front of a transport plane, likely one of the aircraft he helped develop and deploy during his time in the RAF. The image serves as a testament to his dedication and contributions to the field of military aviation, which revolutionized warfare and paved the way for modern air travel. Maitland's career spanned over three decades, during which he played a crucial role in the development and implementation of military aviation technology. His legacy continues to inspire and influence generations of aviators and military personnel, making this photograph a significant historical document.
