Dassault Super

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the sleek and powerful Dassault Super Mystère B2 takes to the sky, leaving a trail of vapor in its wake. The Super Mystère B2, a French jet fighter and ground-attack aircraft, was developed by Dassault Aviation in the late 1950s as a successor to the Mystère IV series. This particular model, designated as the B2, was an improved version of the original Super Mystère, featuring upgraded avionics, weapons systems, and engines. The aircraft's distinctive design is on full display in this image. Its delta wing configuration, with its swept-back leading edge and pronounced dihedral, was a revolutionary departure from the straight wings of earlier aircraft. The wing's unique shape provided greater lift and improved stability at high speeds, making it an ideal choice for both air-to-air combat and ground-attack missions. The Super Mystère B2's powerful engines, two SNECMA Atar 09K-11 turbofans, are visible in this photograph, positioned beneath the wings. These engines delivered an impressive 7,500 pounds of thrust each, enabling the aircraft to reach a top speed of over 650 miles per hour and to fly at altitudes of up to 50,000 feet. The cockpit of the Super Mystère B2 is also visible in this image, with its canopy open to reveal the pilot's seat and instrument panel. The aircraft's advanced avionics, including a radar system and a fire control system, were housed in the nose of the fuselage, providing the pilot with vital information for both air-to-air combat and ground-attack missions. This photograph captures the Super Mystère B2 in its element, soaring through the sky with grace and power. It is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the aviation industry in the mid-20th century and a reminder of the enduring allure of flight.
