EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we witness an aerial refueling operation taking place during the Mediterranean cruise of the USS Intrepid in 1960. At the heart of the scene is an A4D-6 Skyraider (139678) from VA-65, skillfully transferring fuel to a Douglas F4D-1 Skyray (139206) from VF-74. The Skyraider, a versatile and powerful aircraft, was renowned for its ability to perform various roles, including transport, anti-submarine warfare, and as a gunship. The Skyraider's vital mission is not in vain, as it is surrounded by an impressive escort of other iconic aircraft. To the left, an A4D-1 Skyray (139169) from the same squadron, VA-65, stands guard. The Vought F8U-1P Crusader (146871) from VA-112, with its distinctive swept-wing design, also joins the formation, ensuring the safety of the refueling operation. The Douglas F4D-1 Skyray, a single-engine, twin-boom fleet defense interceptor, is receiving fuel from the Skyraider. The Skyray's sleek design and advanced capabilities made it a formidable adversary during the Korean War and continued to serve as a crucial component of the US Navy's fleet throughout the 1950s and 1960s. This photograph captures a moment in time when the US Navy's most advanced aircraft came together to demonstrate their impressive capabilities and the intricacies of mid-air refueling during the USS Intrepid's Mediterranean cruise in 1960.
