1889 1972 Igor Ivanovich Sikorsky

EDITORS COMMENTS
Igor Ivanovich Sikorsky, a pioneering figure in aviation history, is seen in this photograph taken in 1972, the year of his passing. Born on May 25, 1889, in Kiev, Russian Empire, Sikorsky's passion for flying began at an early age. He built his first aircraft, a glider, at the age of 17. After studying engineering in Switzerland and Germany, he returned to Russia and began designing and building heavier-than-air aircraft. In 1913, Sikorsky built the world's first successful multi-engine aircraft, the Ilia Muromets. During World War I, he designed and produced the R-1, the first Russian helicopter. After the Bolshevik Revolution, Sikorsky emigrated to the United States, where he continued his work in aviation. He is best known for designing and building the world's first practical multi-engine transport aircraft, the Sikorsky S-40, which made its first flight in 1927. Sikorsky's contributions to aviation did not stop there. He went on to design and build the world's first commercially successful helicopter, the Sikorsky R-4, in 1942. He also played a key role in the development of the helicopter as a military transport and rescue aircraft. Throughout his long and distinguished career, Sikorsky received numerous awards and accolades for his innovations in aviation. He was a founding member of the National Academy of Engineering and was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1962. Sikorsky's legacy continues to inspire and influence the aviation industry to this day. In this photograph, taken just a few months before his death, he is seen looking thoughtful and reflective, no doubt pondering the many achievements of his remarkable life.
