EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determined faces of the six officers who left Canadian soil aboard the R100 on July 29, 1930. From left to right, we see Sqn Ldr E.L. Johnston, the navigator; Maj G.H. Scott, the assistant director of airship development and pilot; Sqn Ldr R.S. Booth, the captain of R100; Flg Officer M.H. Steff, the second officer of R100; M.A. Giblett, the meteorological officer; and Capt G.F. Meager, the first officer of R100. The R100 was a massive rigid airship, one of the largest in the world at the time, and the officers' departure marked the start of its transatlantic journey. With their eyes fixed forward and expressions of focused determination, these men embodied the spirit of innovation and adventure that drove the development of airship transport in the early 20th century. The R100 was a testament to the advancements in aviation technology, and the officers' successful voyage across the Atlantic solidified Canada's place in the history of airship travel.
