Converted Launched Slipway Sunderland Short
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Short Sunderland III ML821 is seen making its way into the water for the first time, fresh from the factory production line. The Short Sunderland, a versatile flying boat produced by Short Brothers in Belfast, Northern Ireland, was a significant addition to the Royal Air Force's (RAF) fleet during World War II. The Short Sunderland III, specifically, was an amphibian flying boat, designed primarily for long-range maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare. Its spacious interior could accommodate up to eleven crew members and various equipment, including sonobuoy equipment and depth charges. ML821 was one of the many Short Sunderland aircraft produced during the war, with a total of 1,157 built between 1938 and 1945. In this image, the ML821 is seen being launched from the factory slipway, with the help of a crane and a team of workers. The aircraft's distinctive hull and wings glisten in the sunlight, reflecting the anticipation and excitement of the moment. The water below is calm, and the surrounding landscape is dotted with trees and buildings, providing a picturesque backdrop to this historic event. After its successful launch, ML821 underwent further modifications and was later converted to a Short Sunderland MkV, which featured improved armament and avionics. The aircraft served the RAF with distinction, contributing significantly to the Allied victory in World War II. This photograph captures a moment in aviation history, showcasing the power and innovation of the Short Sunderland and the teamwork required to bring such a magnificent machine to life.
