This image depicts Samuel Maresius (1599-1673), a prominent Flemish Protestant churchman and theologian of the Dutch Republic's Golden Age. Born in Groningen, Maresius studied theology at the University of Leiden and later became a professor of theology at the same institution. He is best known for his contributions to Reformed theology, particularly in the areas of biblical criticism and the interpretation of the Old Testament. Maresius' scholarly pursuits were marked by a deep commitment to the Reformed faith and a rigorous approach to biblical study.
