Aubrey Beardsley Ghosts Vincent
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a scene from the first act of Henrik Ibsen's groundbreaking play "Ghosts," as rendered by the visionary artist Aubrey Vincent Beardsley in 1898. Beardsley's interpretation of Ibsen's modernist drama, which premiered in 1881, reflects the artistic and cultural shifts of late-Victorian England. In this image, we see the interior of a drawing-room, where the characters Oswald Alving and Regina Engstrand stand in tense conversation. Oswald, a young man recently returned from the colonies, is engaged to marry Regina's mother, Mrs. Alving. Unbeknownst to Oswald, however, his father, Captain Alving, had an affair with Regina, resulting in the birth of Oswald's half-sister, who later died in the colonies. Regina, a former servant, blackmails Oswald with this revelation, threatening to expose the truth to his fiancée if he does not provide her with financial support. In this scene, Regina has just revealed her secret to Oswald, and his reaction is one of shock and disbelief. Beardsley's intricate and detailed line work captures the dramatic tension between the two characters, as well as the overall sense of unease and moral decay that pervades the play. The use of Art Nouveau motifs and bold, contrasting colors adds to the dark and unsettling atmosphere, making this print a striking visual representation of Ibsen's seminal work.
