EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning botanical print showcases two ferns native to Europe, specifically from the beautiful island of Madeira: Polypodium vulgare and Asplenium scolopendrium. The image is taken from Jane Wallas Penfold's "Madeira Flowers, Fruits and Ferns," published in London by Reeve Brothers in 1845. Polypodium vulgare, also known as the Common Polypody, is depicted on the left side of the plate. This fern is widely distributed throughout Europe and Asia, and is easily identified by its small, round sori, which are located on the underside of its fronds. The print captures the intricate details of its fronds, with their delicate veins and serrated edges. Asplenium scolopendrium, commonly known as the Common Spleenwort or the Hart's Tongue Fern, is depicted on the right side of the plate. This fern is native to Europe, North Africa, and the Mediterranean, and is characterized by its unique, tongue-shaped fronds. The print highlights the intricate details of its fronds, with their wavy edges and the distinct cheilanthoid teeth along the margins. Both ferns belong to different families: Polypodiaceae for Polypodium vulgare and Aspleniaceae for Asplenium scolopendrium. They are also classified under the same order, Polypiales, and class Pteridophyta, which includes all non-seed-bearing vascular plants. This beautiful botanical print not only showcases the natural beauty of these two ferns, but also serves as an important historical record of their appearance and classification. It is a testament to the art and illustration of the 19th century, and a reminder of the rich biodiversity of Europe and its islands.
