EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enchanting scene of The Bund in Shanghai, China during the early 1910s. The Bund, a historic waterfront area located in central Shanghai along the western bank of the Huangpu River, was once the heart of the former International Settlement. In this image, we see a stunning view of the area's impressive colonial architecture, with European-style buildings lining the riverside. The Bund was a symbol of the city's rich cultural and architectural diversity, as various foreign powers had established their own enclaves and left their mark on the area. The statue of an unnamed colonial figure, standing proudly in the foreground, is a reminder of the region's complex history. Such statues, which dotted the riverside, represented the influence of European powers in Shanghai during this time. However, in the 1950s, these statues were removed as part of China's cultural revolution, leaving only the magnificent buildings as a testament to the area's past. The Huangpu River, which separates The Bund from the eastern part of Huangpu District known as Pudong, adds to the area's allure. The Bund has since been restored and transformed into a popular tourist destination, offering visitors a glimpse into Shanghai's fascinating past. This photograph is a beautiful reminder of the city's rich history and the unique blend of cultures that have shaped it over the years.
