EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh: A Prominent Figure in 17th Century Scottish Law and Politics This evocative portrait captures the stern yet intelligent visage of Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh (1636-1691), a towering figure in Scottish law and politics during the late 17th century. Mackenzie's impressive legal career began in 1661 when he was appointed Solicitor General for Scotland, a position he held until 1674. He was later appointed Lord Advocate in 1678, a role he held until his death in 1691. Born in Ross-shire, Scotland, Mackenzie studied law at the University of Aberdeen before embarking on a distinguished legal career. He was known for his rigorous application of the law and his unwavering commitment to upholding order and stability in Scotland. Mackenzie's tenure as Lord Advocate was marked by his successful prosecution of the Glencoe Massacre perpetrators in 1692, a tragic event in which over 30 Macdonald clan members were killed in retaliation for their alleged involvement in the assassination of King William III's commissioner. Mackenzie's political career was equally noteworthy. He was a trusted advisor to both King Charles II and King James VII, serving as a Privy Councillor and Secretary of State for Scotland. Mackenzie played a key role in the negotiations leading to the Treaty of Dunkeld in 1685, which brought an end to the Second Scottish War of Independence. Despite his many accomplishments, Mackenzie's tenure as Lord Advocate was not without controversy. His harsh and unyielding approach to law enforcement earned him the nickname "Bluidy Mackenzie," a moniker that has endured to this day. Nevertheless, Sir George Mackenzie remains an important figure in Scottish history, remembered for his unwavering commitment to upholding the law and maintaining order in a turbulent time.
