Baronet Businessman Dean Faculties Glasgow

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir James King, Baronet (1830-1911), was a prominent businessman and civic leader in Glasgow during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In this striking photograph taken in 1910, Sir James is depicted in formal attire, including his Baronetcy insignia, as he sits before a grand fireplace adorned with the crest of the ancient Barony of Campsie. Sir James held many prestigious positions in Glasgow's civic life. He served as Lord Provost, the city's chief magistrate and ceremonial head, on two separate occasions, first from 1879 to 1882 and later from 1904 to 1910. He was also Dean of Faculties, an honorary position bestowed upon him in recognition of his contributions to the city's educational institutions. In addition, Sir James served as Chancellor's Assessor, a role that involved advising the Lord Chancellor on legal matters. Sir James was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree by the University of Glasgow in recognition of his public service and business achievements. His business interests were varied, but he is best known for his involvement in the shipping industry, where he made his fortune. This photograph captures Sir James King at the height of his career and civic influence, sitting before the historic crest of Campsie, a reminder of his connection to the rich history of Glasgow and Scotland.
