EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury (1843-1913), was a prominent Liberal MP and prolific writer of popular science books during the late Victorian era. In this photograph taken in 1874, Sir John is seen seated at his desk, deep in thought as he holds a quill pen in one hand and a stack of papers in the other. The room is filled with the trappings of a dedicated scholar, including a bookshelf adorned with volumes on various scientific subjects, and an array of intriguing objects displayed on the windowsill. Born into a wealthy and influential family, Sir John was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He entered Parliament in 1868, representing the constituency of Maidstone. However, it was his passion for science that truly set him apart. He was a fellow of the Royal Society and a member of numerous other scientific organizations. Sir John's writing career began in 1868 with the publication of his first book, "The Origin of Civilization and the Effects of the Use of Fire." Over the next several decades, he would go on to write more than 30 books on a wide range of scientific topics, including geology, archaeology, and anthropology. His most famous work, "Prehistoric Times," was first published in 1865 and remains a classic in the field of prehistory. Despite his many accomplishments, Sir John remained humble and dedicated to his work. He was known for his clear and engaging writing style, which made complex scientific concepts accessible to a wide audience. In this photograph, we see him in the midst of his work, surrounded by the tools of his trade and the fruits of his intellect. It is a testament to his enduring legacy as a pioneering scientist and popular writer.
