Cartagena Engravings Etching Etchings Journal Lillustration Quarters Siege Universel

EDITORS COMMENTS
Spain. First Spanish Republic (1873-1874). This evocative etching captures the tense atmosphere during the siege of Cartagena, a pivotal moment in the brief history of the First Spanish Republic. The Government army, led by General Arsenio Martinez Campos, defended the city against the Carlists, a traditionalist and conservative political faction seeking to overthrow the republic. In the image, we see the general quarters of the Government army, with soldiers huddled together, their weapons at the ready. The white tents and uniforms contrast sharply against the dark, ominous sky, reflecting the uncertainty and instability of the political climate. The etching, titled "Cantón e Cartagena," was published in the French journal "L'Illustration. Journal Universel," providing a glimpse into the international interest and coverage of the Spanish Civil War. The siege of Cartagena lasted from October 1873 to February 1874, with the Government army ultimately emerging victorious. However, the First Spanish Republic did not last much longer, as the Liberal and Conservative factions reached a compromise, leading to the Restoration of the Bourbon Monarchy in December 1874. This etching serves as a poignant reminder of the tumultuous political landscape of Spain during this period and the sacrifices made by the soldiers on both sides.
