The Government army, led by General Arsenio Martinez Campos, defended the city against the Carlists, a traditionalist and conservative political faction seeking to overthrow the republic. In the image, we see the general quarters of the Government army, with soldiers huddled together, their weapons at the ready. The white tents and uniforms contrast sharply against the dark, ominous sky, reflecting the uncertainty and instability of the political climate. The etching, titled "Cantón e Cartagena," was published in the French journal "L'Illustration.
