The scene depicts the valiant efforts of the Madrilenos, or the people of Madrid, as they repel the advancing Moorish army. The Moors, led by the Almohad Caliph Abd al-Mu'min, had been making their way northward from Muslim territories in the south, intent on expanding their empire. The Madrilenos, determined to defend their lands, had rallied their forces and prepared for battle.
