A History Of The Birds Of New Zealand Buller Jg Keulemans John Gerrard Keulemans Keulemans Sauropsid Sauropsida Watercolor

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor artwork by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans, featured in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand" Vol.2, Plate 34, dates back to 1888. The illustration showcases two elusive and endemic New Zealand wading birds, the Spottless Crake (Porzana tabuensis tabuensis) and the Banded Rail (Gallirallus philippensis assimilis). The Spottless Crake, also known as the Puweto, is a small, cryptically colored bird that inhabits the wetlands and swamps of the North Island. Its unique camouflage allows it to blend seamlessly with its surroundings, making it an expert at avoiding detection from predators and human observers alike. The Spottless Crake is a shy and secretive bird, preferring to remain hidden in the dense vegetation, only venturing out to forage for food at night. The Banded Rail, also known as the Moho Pereru, is another elusive New Zealand endemic. It is a medium-sized wading bird with distinctive black and white bands on its legs and a brown plumage. The Banded Rail is found in the wetlands and marshes of both the North and South Islands. It is an omnivorous bird, feeding on a variety of invertebrates, seeds, and fruits. Both the Spottless Crake and Banded Rail are considered vulnerable species due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species such as rats, stoats, and ferrets. The preservation of their wetland habitats is crucial for their survival. This beautiful watercolor artwork not only showcases the natural beauty of these two elusive New Zealand wading birds but also serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect them and their habitats.
