Stamp Card produced by Ottmar Zeihar - Congo

Stamp Card produced by Ottmar Zeihar - Congo Independent State. These cards enabled collectors to see stamps which they were unable to obtain, or afford. There is a complete set of 180 cards, some of the smaller countries had a very low printing run and are hence very rare. Used Zeiher cards are very hard to find as the embossed stamp design was not approved by postal authorities as it confused the function of the proper stamps! Date: circa 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing Stamp Card print, published by Ottmar Zeihar around 1904, showcases a montage of stamps from the Congo Independent State. During the early 1900s, these cards provided an avenue for collectors to explore and appreciate stamps that were otherwise difficult to obtain or afford. With a complete set consisting of 180 cards, some representing smaller countries with minimal printing runs, rarity is a common trait among these Zeihar cards. The Congo Independent State, also known as the Congo Free State, was a private territory governed by King Leopold II of Belgium from 1885 to 1908. This region, located in Central Africa, was rich in natural resources and attracted considerable interest from the international philatelic community. However, due to the political complexities and limited availability of official stamps from the region, collectors turned to alternative sources, such as Zeihar's Stamp Cards. Each card in this series features an embossed stamp design, which, although visually appealing, was not approved by postal authorities. The confusion surrounding the function of these embossed designs led to the discontinuation of the Zeihar Stamp Cards as legitimate postage. Today, these cards are highly sought after by collectors for their historical significance and unusual design. This Stamp Card print is a testament to the rich history of philately and the lengths collectors went to explore and document the world's diverse postal systems. The intricate montage of crests, coats of arms, and regional designs showcases the unique character of each country and region, making this an essential addition to any philatelic collection.
