This print depicts King Alfonso VI of Leon (1040-1109), also known as Alfonso the Brave or Alfonso the Valiant. Born in León, Castile, Alfonso was the eldest son of King Ferdinand I of León and Sancha of Castile. He ascended to the throne in 1072, at the tender age of 12, following his father's death. During his reign, Alfonso expanded the Kingdom of León, conquering the city of Toledo in 1085, which is where this statue stands today. The city had been under Muslim rule for over 400 years, and its capture marked a significant milestone in the Reconquista, the long-lasting process of Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors. Alfonso VI was a skilled military leader and a patron of the arts. He supported the development of the School of Toledo, which became a center of learning and intellectual exchange between Christians, Muslims, and Jews. Alfonso's court was known for its cultural richness, attracting scholars, poets, and artists from all over Europe. This impressive statue of Alfonso VI was sculpted by Felipe del Corral in the 18th century.
