EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of an historic and bold act of protest by the British Suffragette movement. The image shows the destroyed Grand Stand at Hurst Park Racecourse, following an arson attack by militant suffragettes Kitty Marion and Betty Giveen on June 8, 1913. The attack was a response to the continued denial of women's right to vote in the United Kingdom. Marion, a prominent suffragette leader, later wrote that the Grand Stand would make an "most appropriate beacon" to commemorate the actions of Emily Wilding Davison, who had tragically died by throwing herself under the king's horse at the Epsom Derby earlier that day. Davison's sacrifice was a powerful symbol of the suffragettes' determination to secure women's suffrage. The destruction of the Grand Stand was a clear message to the authorities and the public that the suffragettes were not afraid to take drastic measures to bring attention to their cause. This poignant photograph is a testament to the courage and resilience of the suffragettes in their fight for women's rights.
