Canton Liberals Movement Politic Provisional Refusal Revolt Revolution Swiss Ticino Vote
EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored engraving depicts a pivotal moment in Swiss history during the Ticino Revolt on September 2, 1890. The canton of Ticino, located in southern Switzerland, was a hotbed of political tension between the radical and conservative factions. In this image, members of the Provisional Government, dressed in formal attire, are seen leaving the Government Palace at Bellinzona. The crowd, a mix of both Italian and Swiss citizens, watches intently as the politicians pass by. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation and uncertainty, as the outcome of the political standoff between the two sides remained uncertain. The Ticino Revolt began as a result of the refusal of the Swiss Federal Council to grant the canton of Ticino the same voting rights as the other cantons. The radicals, who were predominantly Italian-speaking, saw this as a violation of their rights and called for a popular uprising. The movement gained momentum, and on September 2, 1890, a large crowd gathered in Bellinzona to demand change. The Provisional Government, formed by the radicals, took control of the city and established a new administration. Despite the success of the revolt, the Swiss Federal Government refused to recognize the new administration. Tensions escalated, and the Swiss Army was called in to quell the unrest. The conflict lasted for several days, resulting in the deaths of over 100 people. Eventually, the Federal Government negotiated a settlement, granting Ticino limited autonomy and the right to vote in federal elections. This engraving is a poignant reminder of the political upheaval that once shook the peaceful Swiss landscape. The image captures the determination and passion of the people, who were willing to take to the streets to fight for their rights and shape the future of their country.
