1884 Attempt Fated Launched Nova Pole Reach Scott Steam Ship Steam Ships Terra Whaler

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the Terra Nova, a Scottish steam ship launched in 1884, which played a tragic role in Sir Robert Falcon Scott's historic yet ultimately unsuccessful attempt to be the first team to reach the South Pole in 1911. The Terra Nova, which was originally used as a whaler and later converted into a transport vessel for polar expeditions, can be seen here with its distinctive red hull and tall funnel, moored in a frozen harbor. Scott, a Scottish explorer of great renown, had led the Discovery Expedition to Antarctica between 1901 and 1904, during which time the ship had been used to explore the Ross Ice Shelf and the surrounding area. For his second expedition, Scott returned to the Terra Nova, determined to reach the geographic South Pole. The ship, which had been extensively refitted for polar conditions, set sail from London on June 15, 1910, carrying a team of 65 men. After a grueling journey across the Antarctic ice, the team reached the pole on January 17, 1911, only to find that they had been beaten by Roald Amundsen's Norwegian team by just over a month. Tragically, all five members of Scott's polar party died on their return journey, leaving their tent just 11 miles from the safety of their base camp. The Terra Nova, which had braved the treacherous waters of the Southern Ocean to bring Scott and his team to the Antarctic, was later used to bring their bodies back to New Zealand for burial. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the heroic yet ultimately doomed endeavor to conquer the last great unknown on Earth.
