EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Dassault Mirage IVP 25-AX (msn 25) of the French Air Force's Escadron de reconnaissance strategique (STRATRECON) 00-091 is seen demonstrating a Jet-Assisted Take-Off (JATO) at Base Aérienne 112 Reims-Champagne on the 14th of September 1997. The Mirage IVP, a variant of the legendary Mirage IV supersonic strategic bomber, was primarily used for reconnaissance missions by the French Air Force. The Mirage IVP 25-AX, with its distinctive camouflage paint scheme, is positioned on the runway, ready for the JATO take-off. The JATO system, consisting of a series of rockets attached to the underside of the aircraft, is employed to provide an extra boost during take-off, enabling the heavy reconnaissance aircraft to overcome the short runway length at Reims-Champagne Air Base. As the countdown begins, the JATO bottles are ignited, and the Mirage IVP 25-AX accelerates rapidly down the runway. The plumes of smoke from the burning rockets create an impressive sight, as the aircraft lifts off the ground and ascends into the clear blue sky. The French Air Force's Mirage IVP fleet, including the 25-AX, were eventually retired in 2006, marking the end of an era for this iconic strategic reconnaissance aircraft. This photograph is a testament to the power and capability of the Mirage IVP, as well as the skill and expertise of the French Air Force pilots who operated this remarkable aircraft. The JATO take-off demonstration at Base Aérienne 112 Reims-Champagne on the 14th of September 1997, remains a significant moment in the history of the French Air Force and the Mirage IVP program.
