EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the General Motors F-84F Thunderstreak 51-9350, a license-built variant of the F-84F Thunderjet, on display at the Air Force Flight Test Center Museum at Edwards Air Force Base. The F-84F Thunderstreak was a versatile and powerful fighter aircraft, produced by General Motors as part of the Aviation Division's Aircraft Engine and Airframe Division. The Thunderstreak was a development of the original F-84 Thunderjet, featuring an extended nose cone and wingtip fuel tanks, which increased its fuel capacity and combat range. The F-84F Thunderstreak first flew in 1950 and entered service with the United States Air Force in 1953. It was a key player in the Korean War, where it proved its worth as a fighter-bomber, capable of delivering bombs and rockets with precision. This particular aircraft, 51-9350, was used for various testing and evaluation programs at Edwards Air Force Base during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The F-84F Thunderstreak was eventually replaced by more advanced aircraft, but its legacy lives on as a symbol of American military aviation during the Cold War era. This photograph, taken circa 1990, captures the Thunderstreak's timeless design and the rich history it represents. The Thunderstreak's place in the Air Force Flight Test Center Museum at Edwards Air Force Base is a testament to its importance in military aviation history.
