EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the sleek and powerful form of a Republic F-105D-5-RE Thunderchief, serial number 59-1739 (msn D-51), on display at the American Airpower Heritage Museum in Midland-Odessa, Texas. The Thunderchief, a iconic American military aircraft, was produced by Republic Aviation between 1955 and 1961. This particular aircraft served in the United States Air Force (USAF) from 1958 until its retirement in 1976. The F-105D-5-RE Thunderchief was an advanced variant of the Thunderchief series, featuring an upgraded Avco Lycoming TF30-P-12A turbofan engine, which increased the aircraft's thrust and allowed for supersonic flight. The Thunderchief was primarily used as a tactical fighter bomber, capable of delivering a variety of air-to-ground munitions. The Thunderchief's distinctive design, with its swept wings and delta tail, made it a formidable presence in the skies. Its advanced avionics and weapons systems made it a valuable asset to the USAF during the Cold War. After its military service, this Thunderchief, along with many others, found a new home at the American Airpower Heritage Museum, where it serves as a reminder of the important role that military aviation plays in protecting our nation. This photograph, from The Tony Lovelock Collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, captures the Thunderchief in all its glory, on display for visitors to appreciate the engineering and design excellence that went into creating this iconic aircraft.
