Colonies Granary Whitehall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken circa 1900, showcases a group of people gathered outside the Canadian Arch in Whitehall, London. The Canadian Arch, also known as the Canadian Lodge or the Colonies Arch, was a temporary structure built for the 1897 Colonial and Indian Exhibition held in London. The arch, adorned with intricate carvings of Canadian flora and fauna, served as a symbol of the close ties between Canada and Great Britain during this period. In the foreground of the image, a crowd of people, mostly dressed in their Sunday best, are seen admiring the architecture of the arch and the surrounding buildings. Some are posing for photographs, while others are engaged in animated conversations. In the background, the iconic Lantern and Royal Horse Guards buildings can be seen, adding to the grandeur of the scene. To the right of the arch, a building identified as Britains Granary is visible. Britains was a well-known British manufacturer of miniature models and toys, and it's possible that this building was part of their display at the exhibition. The granary, with its red brick facade and tall chimney, stands out against the blue sky, adding an industrial touch to the otherwise picturesque setting. This photograph, part of the Boswell collection and titled 'Tour of the Colonies - Canadian Arch, Whitehall,' offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the excitement and curiosity that surrounded the Colonial and Indian Exhibition and the close relationship between Canada and Great Britain during this time.
