EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite tapestry, entitled "The Trojan War: Achilles Death," is the eighth piece in a series created by the Master of Coëtivy, also known as Henry or Conrard of Vulcop, around 1470. The manufacturing of this masterpiece took place in Tournai, a city in present-day Belgium that was renowned for its textile industry during the late Middle Ages. The series, which depicts various scenes from the epic Trojan War, is a testament to the artistic prowess of the Flemish school during this period. Measuring 482 x 942 cm, this tapestry is a stunning example of the intricate detail and vibrant colors that characterize Flemish art of the time. The tapestry was created using wool and silk, with approximately 6-7 threads per cm, resulting in a richly textured and visually stunning work of art. The scene depicted in this tapestry is the death of Achilles, one of the most famous heroes of Greek mythology. Achilles, who was invulnerable to injury everywhere except his heel, was killed by an arrow to the heel, delivered by the Trojan prince Paris, using the bow of the god Achilles' own friend Patroclus. The tapestry captures the moment of Achilles' death, with the hero lying on the ground, surrounded by his comrades and enemies. This tapestry is now housed in the Cathedral Museum of Zamora, Spain, where it continues to captivate visitors with its intricate details and vivid colors. The Master of Coëtivy's "Trojan War" series is a testament to the artistic talent and craftsmanship of the Flemish school during the late Middle Ages, and this piece, in particular, is a standout example of the genre.
