1604 1657 Albans Burgh Deputy Marquis Royalist

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Ulrick de Burgh, Marquis of Clanricarde and second Earl of St Albans, a pivotal figure in Irish and British history during the mid-17th century. Born in 1604, Ulrick was the eldest son of the first Marquis of Clanricarde and a descendant of the powerful Anglo-Irish Burgh family. He held significant political and military power in Ireland as Lord Deputy and was a staunch Royalist commander during the English Civil War. During the 1640s, Ulrick played a crucial role in maintaining the rule of King Charles I in Ireland amidst growing unrest and rebellion. He successfully quelled several uprisings and was instrumental in the defense of Dublin against the forces of the Confederation of Kilkenny. However, his loyalty to the crown led him to be viewed with suspicion by some in the English Parliament, and he was eventually impeached and stripped of his offices in 1642. Despite this setback, Ulrick continued to support the Royalist cause and was a key figure in the Irish Confederate Wars. He was captured by the Parliamentarians in 1648 and held in the Tower of London until his release in 1650. After the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Ulrick was reinstated in his Irish titles and positions. He died in 1657, having left a lasting impact on Irish history as a fierce defender of the crown and a formidable military leader. This portrait, likely taken during Ulrick's tenure as Lord Deputy of Ireland, showcases his regal bearing and military prowess. The intricately detailed clothing and accessories, including the collar of the Order of the Garter and the feathered bonnet, underscore his noble status and position of power. The portrait offers a glimpse into the complex political landscape of the time and the role of individuals like Ulrick de Burgh in shaping the course of history.
