EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the essence of traditional Scottish clan costume as worn by members of the Urquhart clan. Taken in the early 20th century, this image is a precious reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the Highland clans of Scotland. The Urquhart clan, like many others, has a long and complex history that is deeply intertwined with the history of Scotland itself. The man in the photograph wears the full regalia of the Urquhart tartan, which is instantly recognizable by its distinctive black and red checkered pattern. The tartan fabric is expertly pleated and draped over a knee-length kilt, which is held up by a sgian-dubh or black shoe, a traditional Scottish leather-sheathed knife worn as part of the national dress. A sporran, a pouch worn suspended from the waist by a belt, completes the lower half of the outfit. The man's upper body is adorned with a red and black plaid, which is draped over his left shoulder and pinned at the right shoulder with a brooch. A white shirt, or waes-haid, and a red waistcoat, or faidhleann, are also visible. The man wears a black sporran, or purse, suspended from his waist by a belt, and a white cravat, or neckcloth, completes the ensemble. The woman in the photograph wears a long, flowing tartan skirt, or an arisaid, which is belted at the waist with a sash, or balmoral belt. Her blouse, or blousean, is white and features a high neckline and long sleeves. She wears a shawl, or plaid, draped over her shoulders, and her hair is styled in the traditional Scottish highland fashion, with ringlets framing her face. Together, this man and woman represent the proud and enduring spirit of the Urquhart clan and the Scottish Highlands as a whole. Their traditional attire is a testament to the rich cultural heritage that continues to inspire and captivate people around the world.
