Colonel Duncombe Feversham Helmsley Hussars Lieutenant Viscount

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Charles Duncombe, Viscount Helmsley, is seen in formal attire as he assumes the role of the 2nd Earl of Feversham in 1915. At the time of this image, Duncombe, born in 1879, had recently inherited the title and honor following the passing of his father. The Earl's distinguished military career was evident in his uniform as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Yorkshire Hussars of the Imperial Yeomanry. The Earl's life was about to take a dramatic turn. In 1916, just a year after this photograph was taken, he would be called to serve his country in the Great War. He answered the call with courage and dedication, leading his troops into battle at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette. Tragically, Earl Helmsley met his end on the battlefield, giving his life for his country and his people. This poignant photograph captures a moment of transition in the Earl's life, a time of pride and accomplishment, as he embraced his new role as a nobleman and military leader. Yet, it also serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War, as Earl Helmsley's story ultimately became one of valor and loss.
