11th 1858 28th Colonel Commandant Duty Lyons Order Regt Sept Special Staten Washington

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures Colonel George Lyons, commander of the 8th Regiment, New York State Militia's Washington Greys, during a military drill on Staten Island in 1858. The 8th Regiment, also known as the Washington Greys, was a part of the New York State Militia and was formed in 1851. Colonel Lyons, an experienced military officer, assumed command of the regiment in 1857. In this photograph, Colonel Lyons is seen standing in front of his men, giving orders during a training session. The soldiers, dressed in their distinctive gray uniforms, are attentively listening to their commander. The camp in the background and the orderly arrangement of the soldiers suggest that this was a formal military exercise. The 8th Regiment had a special role in the military structure of New York State. They were part of the Special Commandant's Corps, which was responsible for maintaining order and security within the state. The regiment was called upon to quell riots and disturbances, as well as to provide assistance during natural disasters. This photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of a military regiment during the mid-19th century. It also highlights the importance of military training and discipline in maintaining public order and security. Colonel Lyons' leadership and dedication to his men are evident in this image, making it a valuable historical record of the Washington Greys 8th Regiment N.Y.S.T.
