This striking image captures Colonel George Lyons, commander of the 8th Regiment, New York State Militia's Washington Greys, during a military drill on Staten Island in 1858. The 8th Regiment, also known as the Washington Greys, was a part of the New York State Militia and was formed in 1851. Colonel Lyons, an experienced military officer, assumed command of the regiment in 1857. In this photograph, Colonel Lyons is seen standing in front of his men, giving orders during a training session.
