Top of the Washington Monument: Setting the Capstone, c.1885 (February) This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of the Washington Monument, as the final capstone is set into place. The image, taken around February 1885, shows a crowd of men gathered on the scaffolding that encircled the monument during its construction. The men, dressed in work clothes and hats, appear focused and determined as they go about their task. At the very pinnacle of the monument, two figures can be seen installing the capstone, their progress marked by a long pole held aloft. The Washington Monument, a symbol of American history and national pride, had been under construction since 1848, and the setting of the capstone marked a significant milestone in its completion. The monument, dedicated to the first President of the United States, George Washington, stands tall and proud against a clear blue sky, its white marble surface gleaming in the sunlight. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the monument was still a work in progress, and the sense of accomplishment and anticipation was palpable.
