EDITORS COMMENTS
William Earl of Stirling, also known as William Alexander, was a prominent Scottish statesman and poet who lived during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Born in 1567, Alexander was educated in France and later served as a diplomat and advisor to King James VI of Scotland. In 1603, when James VI ascended to the English throne as James I, Alexander accompanied him to London and continued to serve in various diplomatic roles. Alexander's literary talents were also notable. He is best known for his poem "The Fair Quhilk," which was published in 1604 and is considered one of the finest examples of Scottish poetry from the period. The poem is a love letter to the Scottish countryside and is filled with rich imagery and poetic language. In addition to his literary pursuits, Alexander was also involved in Scottish politics and served as Lord Privy Seal and Lord Chancellor of Scotland. He played a key role in the negotiations that led to the Union of the Crowns between Scotland and England in 1603. Despite his many accomplishments, Alexander's life was not without controversy. He was involved in several disputes with other Scottish nobles and was implicated in a plot to assassinate King James I in 1605. The plot was discovered and Alexander was exiled from Scotland for several years. Despite these challenges, Alexander continued to write and serve in various diplomatic roles. He died in London in 1640, leaving behind a significant body of work that continues to be celebrated in Scottish literature and history. This portrait of William Earl of Stirling captures the distinguished and intellectual air of this important Scottish figure, with his serious expression and elegant attire.
