WW1 - Loos - Tower Bridge - pithead gear towers

WW1, Loos Tower Bridge - the name given to a pair of pithead gear towers here (also sometimes known as Crystal Palace ). Men from the Black Watch and the Cameron Highlanders reached this location between 7 and 8am on the morning of the 25th of September 1915 - around an hour after the infantry advance had commenced. An article in The Times on the Vanishing Front published in October 1923 reported that the town of Loos was (by then) practically rebuilt, with a " stumpy" building having replaced the Crystal Palace. Date: circa 1914

Battlefield Calais Crystal Destroyed Gear Loos Mine Mining Towers Pithead

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the haunting scene of the Loos-Tower Bridge, a pair of pithead gear towers that once stood proudly in the mining town of Loos, Pas de Calais, France. The towers, also known as the Crystal Palace, were a recognizable landmark before the onset of World War I. On the morning of September 25, 1915, around an hour after the infantry advance had commenced during the Battle of Loos, soldiers from the Black Watch and the Cameron Highlanders reached this location. By then, the once bustling town of Loos had been largely destroyed, with the Crystal Palace reduced to rubble. The Times reported in October 1923 that Loos was practically rebuilt by then, with a "stumpy" building having replaced the Crystal Palace. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of war on communities and their landmarks. The pithead gear towers of Loos-Tower Bridge, a symbol of the town's mining heritage, were among the many casualties of the First World War. This photograph, taken circa 1914, offers a glimpse into the history of the Battle of Loos and the destruction it brought upon the Pas de Calais region. The image is a poignant reminder of the past, showcasing the resilience of communities in the face of adversity and the enduring power of history to evoke emotion and reflection.
