Kitchener Legal Legislation Lettering Proclamation Recruiting Recruitment Reserve Schedule Thirteen

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful recruitment poster from World War I, dated 10 February 1916, is a Proclamation regarding the Army Reserve, also known as the Military Service Act of 1916 (Army Form D 471/1). It is one of thirteen printed posters produced in Britain between August 1914 and March 1916, during a critical period of the war when manpower was becoming increasingly scarce. The poster, which features bold red text and lettering against a plain background, was issued under the authority of Lord Kitchener, the British Secretary of State for War, and the Secretary of State for India. The text of the Proclamation urges all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 41 to enlist in the Army Reserve, emphasizing the importance of their duty to their country and the need for every man to do his part to support the war effort on both the home and front lines. The Military Service Act, which was passed in January 1916, gave the British government the power to conscript men into the military for the first time in peacetime. This poster, along with others like it, was used to encourage voluntary enlistment before conscription was implemented in May 1916. The poster's stark message and evocative imagery reflect the sense of urgency and determination that characterized the British war effort during this period. This historic poster is an important reminder of the sacrifices and commitments made by ordinary people during wartime, and serves as a testament to the enduring power of visual communication in shaping public opinion and mobilizing resources for the greater good.
