EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored illustration showcases the young and regal Louis XIV of France, as depicted in a painting housed in the Musee de Blois. The image, created through the meticulous process of lithography by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie, under the expert guidance of Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard, is an exquisite representation of the historical costume of the 17th century. Louis XIV, born in 1638, ascended to the throne at the tender age of four, following the death of his father, King Louis XIII. This illustration captures the young monarch in his prime, radiating confidence and power. He is depicted wearing the sumptuous attire of the French court, an intricately designed doublet adorned with gold lace and embroidery, a voluminous white shirt, a velvet cape, and a three-cornered hat. The rich colors and textures of the fabric, as well as the meticulous attention to detail, serve to transport us back to the opulent world of the French court in the 17th century. This illustration is taken from Georges Duplessis' seminal work, "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867. The work was a groundbreaking study of historical fashion, providing a detailed record of the evolving styles and trends of the time. This illustration, in particular, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of the young Louis XIV, a monarch who would go on to shape the course of French history for generations to come.
