Young Oxford Student, College Master and Bulldogs
A young Oxford student greets the Master of his College with all due deference (making sure to hide his smoking pipe behind his back), whilst the Bulldogs (College security) look on with less calm acceptance, as they realise they have found the culprit of some misdemeanour. The result is shown on the right as the two heavies chase their target!

Bull Dog Bulldogs Chasing Cheeky Doffing Etiquette Hiding Lance Master Mortar Naughty Oxbridge Pipe Polite Politeness Railings Robes Security Thackeray Traditions Culprit Freshman
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken circa 1910s, a young Oxford student, dressed in the traditional academic attire of a mortarboard cap and gown, greets the Master of his College with all due deference. The Master, an esteemed scholar and academic leader, is depicted in his robes and academic cap, with a stern expression, as he receives the polite greeting from the young man. However, the atmosphere in the scene is not entirely serene. Two burly "Bulldogs," the College security guards, stand nearby, their expressions less calm as they realize they have found the culprit of some misdemeanor. The young student, ever the cheeky and naughty freshman, hides his smoking pipe behind his back, trying to maintain an air of politeness and etiquette. The Bulldogs, with their distinctive caps and lances, are the embodiment of tradition and discipline, tasked with maintaining order and enforcing College rules. They watch the scene unfold with a mixture of resignation and determination, knowing that they must apprehend the offender and bring him to account. As the young student attempts to escape, the Bulldogs spring into action, giving chase. The Master, ever the diplomat, looks on with a mixture of amusement and disapproval, knowing that such incidents are all part of the rich tapestry of life at Oxford University. This photograph captures the essence of Oxford University in the early 20th century, with its traditions, etiquette, and the ever-present presence of the Bulldogs, who ensured that students adhered to the rules, even if it meant a playful chase through the College grounds.
