Zamora Pyxis. 946: An Exquisite Artifact from the Hispano-Moresque Period This stunning pyxis, or small box, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Hispano-Moresque art tradition. Dating back to the 11th century, during the reign of the Caliph of Cordoba, Al-Hakam II, this intricately decorated piece bears a notice that reads, "This pyxis was given by the Caliph Al-Hakam II to his heir, Hisham II, during the Hijra year 485 (1092 AD)." The notice, written in both Basque and Arabic scripts, adds a fascinating historical context to the object. The Basque inscription is believed to have been added later, possibly during the 16th or 17th century, when the pyxis was in the possession of the Hakon family of the Basque Country. The pyxis is adorned with intricate geometric and vegetal motifs, typical of the Moorish art style. The exterior is covered in delicate, interlacing patterns, while the interior is decorated with a beautiful scene of the Prophet Muhammad's Night Journey, or Isra and Mi'raj, depicted in the traditional Moresque style.
