EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lantern slide depicts a gold mine in what was then known as Rhodesia, now modern-day Zimbabwe, during the late 1890s. The British South Africa Company, under the leadership of Cecil Rhodes, had established control over the region, which was rich in natural resources, including gold. The image captures the harsh realities of gold mining in the late 19th century. Miners, likely of various ethnic backgrounds, are shown working deep in the mine, using picks and shovels to extract the precious metal from the rocky walls. Dust covers their faces and clothing, and the dim light from the lanterns illuminates only a small area, leaving the rest of the mine shrouded in darkness. The conditions in the mines were notoriously dangerous, with accidents and fatalities commonplace. The miners worked long hours in cramped and hazardous conditions, often for low wages. Despite these challenges, the lure of gold brought thousands of men to the region, fueling the growth of the mining industry and the expansion of European settlement. This lantern slide offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the history of Zimbabwe's gold mining industry during the late 1800s. The image serves as a reminder of the human cost of resource extraction and the complex history of colonialism in Africa.
