EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Avro 685 York C. 1 transport, a remarkable aircraft originally designed for the RAF during World War II. Built using the wings, engines, and twin-fin tail arrangement of the iconic Lancaster bomber, this formidable machine took its first flight on July 5th, 1942. While only a few were deployed during wartime, volume production commenced in 1945 with over 250 units manufactured for various purposes. In this particular image taken at Blackbushe airport in Hampshire during January 1952, we witness an extraordinary sight. The aircraft is surrounded by billowing flames as it undergoes testing utilizing F. I. D. O - Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation. This ingenious method was employed to disperse fog temporarily around runways, ensuring safe landings for night bombing mission aircraft. The photograph not only showcases the power and beauty of aviation but also highlights the dedication to safety that characterized this era of flying. As former RAF machines found new homes with British and overseas operators after their service days ended, they continued to contribute to aviation history. This snapshot from Memory Lane Prints serves as a reminder of both technological advancements and innovative solutions developed within aviation during the mid-20th century. It encapsulates an era where bravery met ingenuity in order to push boundaries and ensure safer skies for all who took flight.
