The early days of August 1914 saw the Russian army make steady progress through Poland and on towards Germany and Austria. This Russian column was pictured shortly after arriving in Kielce, just south of Warsaw in the west of Poland. However, their success was short lived. German forces in the North started to gain the upper hand, culminating in the Battle of Tannenberg in which the Russian Second Army suffered severe losses. They did make ground in the south though, routing the Austrian army at Lemberg. Such gains were to be few and far between for Russia however and by 1918 the army and indeed the country had collapsed into chaos. The Russia that emerged from that chaos was to be unrecogniseable from the country that entered the Great War. The Russian bear had been left crippled, his Czar deposed and a previously insignificant movement had emerged and come to power. Communism

Despite this setback, Russia managed to make gains in the south by routing the Austrian army at Lemberg. Unfortunately for Russia, these successes were few and far between. As years passed and chaos engulfed both its military and society as a whole, it became evident that by 1918, Russia had transformed into an unrecognizable nation from its pre-war state. The once mighty Russian bear now stood crippled with its Czar deposed while an insignificant movement known as Communism had risen to power.
