Postmen and women in Leamington have been chosen to test a new superbike aimed at
Postmen and women in Leamington have been chosen to test a new superbike aimed at speeding up deliveries. Posties traditional bikes are destined to follow red telephone boxes into extinction as a six-month trial of new mountain-style machines gets under way. Leamington is one of just five towns in Britain taking part in the Royal Mail bike test. The others are Swindon, Reading, Ipswich and Guilford. The first new version of the postmans bike in more than 50 years is lighter, sturdier and safer. It also has a plastic basket to hold the delivery sack. If the trials are successful, the bike will gradually replace the Royal Mails 35, 000 traditional bicycles.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this nostalgic print from 1990, we see postman Hugh O'Brien from Leamington on one of the new delivery bikes. Postmen and women in Leamington were chosen to test a new superbike aimed at speeding up deliveries, as traditional bikes were slowly becoming obsolete. This six-month trial was part of an initiative by the Royal Mail to modernize their fleet and improve efficiency. Leamington was one of just five towns in Britain participating in this exciting bike test, alongside Swindon, Reading, Ipswich, and Guilford. The new version of the postman's bike was a significant upgrade from its predecessor - lighter, sturdier, and safer. It even featured a plastic basket to hold the delivery sack. If successful during these trials, these mountain-style machines would gradually replace the Royal Mail's 35,000 traditional bicycles across the country. This marked a major milestone for postal services as they embraced technological advancements in transport. The photograph captures Hugh O'Brien with his infectious smile while waving happily on his brand-new delivery bike. It symbolizes not only progress but also reflects the dedication and enthusiasm of postal staff who are always ready to adapt to changes for better service. This image takes us back to an era when cycling played an essential role in delivering mail efficiently throughout communities. It serves as a reminder of how far transportation methods have come since then while evoking feelings of nostalgia for simpler times when posties pedaled through neighborhoods with smiles on their faces – truly capturing "on yer bike" spirit!
