Donald Campbell, Coniston Water, Lancashire, pictures taken on the day of his death
Donald Campbell, Coniston Water, Lancashire, pictures taken on the day of his death, 4th January 1967.
Campbell was killed when Bluebird K7 flipped and disintegrated at a speed in excess of 300 mph (480 km/h)
Bluebird had completed a north-south run at an average of 297.6 mph (478.9 km/h), and a peak speed of 315 mph (507 km/h).
The second run was even faster; as K7 passed the start of the measured kilometre, she was travelling at over 320 mph (510 km/h).
However her stability had begun to break down and the front of the boat started to bounce out of the water on the starboard side. K7 lifted from the water at an ever increasing angle, before she took off at a 90-degree to the water surface.
She somersaulted and plunged back into the lake, nose first. The boat then cartwheeled across the water before coming to rest.
The impact broke Bluebird forward of the air intakes where Campbell was sitting, killing him instantly; the main hull sank shortly afterwards.
Donald Campbell remains the only person to set both world land and water speed records in the same year (1964)

Remembering Donald Campbell - A Tragic End to a Speed Legend
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This poignant print captures the final moments of Donald Campbell, an iconic figure in the world of speed records. Taken on January 4th, 1967, at Coniston Water in Lancashire, it immortalizes the ill-fated day that forever changed history. Campbell met his untimely demise when his beloved Bluebird K7 hydroplane flipped and disintegrated at an astonishing speed exceeding 300 mph (480 km/h). Prior to this catastrophic event, Bluebird had already achieved remarkable speeds during its north-south run - averaging 297.6 mph (478.9 km/h) with a peak of 315 mph (507 km/h). However, tragedy struck during the second run as instability caused K7's front to bounce out of the water on one side. In a terrifying sequence of events captured by this photograph, the boat lifted off at a sharp angle before somersaulting and plunging nose-first into Coniston Water. The impact instantly claimed Campbell's life while shattering Bluebird forward of where he was seated. Despite this tragic end, Donald Campbell's legacy remains unparalleled. In 1964 alone, he accomplished what no other person has ever achieved - setting both world land and water speed records in the same year. His indomitable spirit and unwavering pursuit for greatness will forever be remembered through images like these from Memory Lane Prints.
